Scott Logan is a Naturalist, Cinematographer, Wildlife Photographer and Graphic Artist.
From a very early age, Scott was fascinated by the grandeur of nature. Spending long summers exploring Southern California’s varied landscapes and establishing a special connection to its abundant wildlife, he felt a need to document what he saw. This was the beginning of a long journey, one that would take him to some of the most remote places in the world and back again. He would eventually feel compelled to share his deep knowledge of the natural world, and today his life’s mission is to help people connect with nature in a meaningful way.
Scott purchased his first Nikon 35mm camera and water housing in his teens, literally getting his photographic feet wet documenting local surfers from the water line's perspective. His love of being out in nature and capturing its wonders with a camera lead to the beginning of a 40+ year career in the arts. In the days when everything was shot on film and the first graphics computers were coming online, images had to be digitized. Scott became a skilled Hell 341 Drum Scanner operator before graduating to high-end color editing and correction. It was at this time that he and his partner Bonnie McFarlin opened a Graphic Arts Studio in Glendale, California servicing the music and food packaging industry.
During the years of working with images in their shop, Scott honed his camera skills and began capturing captivating wildlife photographs. Documenting wildlife with cameras presents many challenges, but what Scott had in his favor was his deep knowledge of wildlife behavior and endless patience. Over time his kit grew and contained a Nikon D5 paired with a NIKKOR 800mm f/5 lens, but it was macro photography that he eventually gravitated to. Scott was entranced by the beauty of tiny animals, and he became focused on revealing this fantastic natural world that normally goes unnoticed.
It was nearly two decades ago when a commitment was made to make wildlife, photography and videography his full time job. Scott and Bonnie opened Wild Wings Ecology, a brick and mortar nature store and Community Center with a focus on education, who’s mission is to connect Angeleno’s with their local wildlife. Along with being a wildlife guide and conducting consultations, Scott advises and assists on nature documentaries. He is an active wildlife documentarian, with clips appearing in both movies and television, and images appearing in books, magazines, galleries and scientific periodicals.
Scott also currently occupies the role of Naturalist at the renowned Gottlieb Native Garden, documenting its wildlife and monitoring the overall health of the Garden. He is in charge of coordinating the Garden’s University research projects as well as being a collaborator with UC Davis’ Hummingbird Health Conservation Program. Scott’s work on the property has uncovered insects previously unknown to science, contributed data to peer-reviewed research papers, provided specimens for museum collections, and strengthen the connection between native gardens and biodiversity, which National Geographic Magazine referenced in its September, 2022 issue.
